Insulation Cost Calculator

Quick answer: Multiply your area by the material price per square foot you were quoted or found, add labour per square foot if you are hiring, and add extras such as air sealing, baffles, machine rental and disposal. The result uses only your own numbers; we do not publish prices because they vary widely by region and over time.

Planning estimates only — not a quote, energy audit or code compliance check. R-values per inch are typical figures; the product label and bag chart govern. Recommended levels: see ENERGY STAR (U.S.) or Natural Resources Canada and your local building code. Vermiculite may contain asbestos: do not disturb it.

How it works

Total = area × (material $/sq ft + labour $/sq ft) + extras. Get material prices from current store listings or supplier quotes, and labour from written contractor quotes. Ask each contractor to state the R-value or settled depth they will install, whether air sealing and baffles are included, and how they handle old insulation. Compare quotes on the same R-value. For incentives, see insulation rebates, which points to official programs only. For a bigger-picture view see attic insulation cost.

Worked example

Figures below are illustrative examples (2026-10-29), not quotes or guarantees.

Assumptions: 1,000 sq ft, a made-up $1.00/sq ft for material, DIY so $0 labour, $300 extras for air sealing supplies and baffles. Total = 1,000 × 1.00 + 300 = $1,300 ($1.30/sq ft). These are not real prices.

They change too much by region and date to be honest. Use your own quotes.
